Marsha Ternus, chairwoman of The Harkin Institute’s National Advisory Council, is the 2019 recipient of Drake University’s Distinguished Alumni Award, the top honor bestowed upon alumni of Drake.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes outstanding achievement by an individual in a career or profession and exemplary service to the community and University.

Ternus received her Juris Doctor from Drake in 1977. She is an attorney in Des Moines and former chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. She was the first woman to serve as the chief justice for Iowa’s highest court.

Ternus was the first executive director of The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement and continues to provide invaluable leadership for the organization as chairwoman of the NAC and a member of the Institute’s building committee.

She has served on the Drake University Board of Trustees and the Drake Law School, and in 1996, the school awarded her its Alumni of the Year award. Read Drake’s full write-up about Ternus.
