Harkin Institute Executive Director Joseph Jones shared the following message with Institute supporters on Saturday, March 28, 2020.

Like you, we are monitoring news about the coronavirus pandemic and doing our best to continue the valuable work of The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement during this challenging time.

Also, like many of you, we are working remotely and doing our part to social distance and help flatten the curve. As we continue to reevaluate our programming in the coming weeks and months one thing is certain, we are committed to providing the analysis, resources and expert insights you have come to expect from The Harkin Institute.

Here are a few ways you can remain engaged with The Harkin Institute during this time of social distancing.

COVID-19 Resources
The Harkin Institute has gathered a list of valuable resources about COVID-19 specific to those who are at high risk, including people with disabilities.

Our Associate Director of Wellness and Nutrition Policy Lyndi Buckingham-Schutt has been sharing her public health expertise through interviews and articles on our website, like this one about the importance of practicing social distancing.

Drake University also has a webpage with the university’s latest coronavirus-response measuresand valuable resources related to the pandemic.

Video event with Dr. Terry Wahls
The Harkin Institute is excited to collaborate with Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center to provide a discussion with Dr. Terry Wahls about ketogenic eating and fasting for improving brain health and longevity. In the discussion, Dr. Wahls also discusses COVID-19. The video is available online for free through Monday, March 30. Additional details are available here.

Sussman Lecture Recap
If you couldn’t join us for our recent Sussman Lecture featuring Dr. Jean-Baptiste Richardier, co-founder of Humanity & Inclusion, you can read a transcript from the event and see photos here.

ADA Anniversary
As you can imagine, the pandemic has put a dent in ADA anniversary gatherings, but it hasn’t dampened our spirit of celebration for 30 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act! Check out these videos we filmed with Drake University students and members of the ADA Generation to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

And read all about the state of disability employment in Iowa in this great series from the Des Moines Business Record.

We would like to hear from you in the coming days and weeks. What would you find valuable from The Harkin Institute? Respond to this email with your ideas for how we can continue to advance our mission during this uncertain time.

We appreciate your ongoing interest and support of The Harkin Institute and our work to inform citizens, inspire creative cooperation, and catalyze change on issues of social justice, fairness, and opportunity.

Sincerely,

Joseph Jones
