DES MOINES — The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement is pleased to welcome Victoria Brenton, MPH, as the institute’s Director of Wellness and Nutrition.

“We are thrilled to welcome Victoria, whose deep expertise in community health systems will be vital as she takes on the role of Wellness and Nutrition Director,” said Craig Owens, Executive Director of The Harkin Institute. “At The Harkin Institute, we believe that access to healthcare, nutrition, and a supportive environment are fundamental human rights. Her vision for forward-thinking nutrition, wellness, and environment initiatives will ensure that The Harkin Institute continues to make a positive impact in these areas.”

“I am honored to join The Harkin Institute, and I am energized by the opportunity to build on the incredible legacy established by Senator Harkin and Ruth Harkin,” said Brenton. “I look forward to creating collaborative partnerships and promoting evidence-based policies that promote wellness and nutrition to improve our communities.”

Brenton brings more than eighteen years of public health and policy experience. She earned her Master of Public Health from Des Moines University and Bachelor of Liberal Studies from Iowa State. Her cancer prevention, policy, and screening expertise, as well as mental health program management experience comes from her time with the now Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Earlier in her career, Brenton served as Senator Harkin’s healthcare and disability legislative correspondent. She is an advisory member of the Iowa Environmental Council’s Cancer and Environmental Risk Factor committee that produced the Environmental Risk Factors and Iowa’s Cancer Crisis report. She lives in Des Moines, Iowa, with her spouse, Drake University graduate Adam Lackey, JO’04, and twin 6th graders, George and Zelda.
