In 2019, The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement awarded four D.C. Experience Scholarships to Drake University undergraduates who are interning in Washington, D.C. this summer.

The scholarship, which is reserved for students who demonstrate financial need, was established by former Harkin staffers who understand the importance of having a diverse workforce on Capitol Hill. However, internship experience is often necessary to obtain coveted positions in Washington. Many of these internships pay very little or nothing at all, which can put these important experiences out of reach for many students without additional help. The D.C. Experience Scholarship helps cover the costs of housing for the summer and travel to and from D.C.

This year’s recipients include:

  • Ivy Beckenholdt who is interning for Congresswoman Cindy Axne
  • Rachel Fritz who is interning at Bread for the World
  • Sloan Nickel who is interning at the National Women’s Law Center
  • Julie Uram who is interning at The Center for Science in the Public Interest

Each scholarship recipient will be providing bi-weekly updates on their experiences in Washington, D.C. Follow along here.
